Evaluations are now online for the High School School Solo Ensemble Festival held on January 28th at Cadillac High School.

Please, take the time to fill out the evaluation. It only takes a few minutes and is very simple to do online. Your evaluations help help the Adjudicator chair make good decisions when hiring judges for our festivals.

The evaluations are at msboa1.org They can be found on the left side of the webpage under the Evaluations heading.

Thank you to all that worked at the HS S & E festival on Saturday at Cadillac HS. Snow may blow and cover the roads, but District One students over-came and were wonderfully successful!

Please be sure to register for State S & E, but be careful to follow the book and online instructions. Please be sure to take time to look over your students events before State S & E and double check to be sure you have any necessary printed receipts/licenses for online purchase. The State festival will simply follow the policy rules in the MSBOA Yearbook.

An adjudicator evaluation should be appearing soon, online, PLEASE be sure to take a moment to complete this evaluation. We often have an adjudicator that is on probation status~ trying to reach the next level and these evaluations are a critical part of this process.

One red "Trio" MP3 player was found, I have it, let me know if it belongs to your school

The spring MS solo & ensemble festival deadline is March 7th, so it seems right around the corner in our minds.....

Please remind your students that there is great food available at a reasonable price at our school!

There will be information tables at each entrance. Park on the lakeside to come in the Jr High or park just north of the stadium to come in by the auditorium. If you are loading in a lot of equipment for percussion performance, please be finished by 8 am so the room temperature returns. Every student who knows what they are doing when they arrive is appreciated!!! I have attached a map of rooms for you all...

Please email any known scratches ASAP. I have requests for early/late schedule switches from a few schools.

Be aware that each director/school may "switch" their own student/school times, but only WITHIN sections. Do NOT switch any events from section to section ~ only time switching within the same section. Example: John Doe P005 2:18pm switches with Jane Doe P005 9:14am.

Thanks for taking the time to read and reflect! The whole thing is so sad.

I think back to the 1970's. At that time MSBOA was top dog as they are now. MSVA (as MSVMA was then called) was tied to MMEA. The district boundries and numbers were different and events, especially festivals, conflicted a lot. Students who both played and sang were put into positions of having to choose going to play wirth the band or orchestra or singing with the choir. Which solo and ensemble festival did they want to attend? Etc.

As you may or may not know, the Presidential terms of MSBOA and MSVMA are on alternating years. Royden Swaffield was entering his second year as MSBOA President when I became MSVA President. We got together to see if there was an answer to the conflicts. Since MSBOA was the big dog, it was agreed that MSVA would adopt MSBOA District numbers with some boundary changes. Lots of district boundries wqere changed and most districts would have both city and country - District 4 which was huge, would be divided and District 15 was created - MSBOA would set their dates early and MSVA would then set dates the avoided conmflicts, etc.

Since boundry changes affected most everyone, it required By-Law changes for both organizations. This, quite naturally, carried over to the next year. That would be my 2nd year as MSVA President. Enter Don Flickinger as MSBOA President. Don sold the MSBOA Board on the changes and, in turn, the vast majoriety of the membership. I'm not sure how MSVA did it, but by the time the school year was over, it was done.

As the little dog, MSVA gave up a lot of traditions, habits, picking any dates they wanted, etc., but MSBOA gave in too. This was especially true with the old District 4 where lots of power resided. But it got done and EVERYONE, especially the music students of Michigan were the winners.

I guess it's all about: realizing where you are in the pecking order along with the realization that EVERYONE MUST GIVE!

As an example, if MSBOA leaves the convention, what happens to the MSBOA Band Directors in small districts where they are Mr or Mrs or MS Music? Where will they get help, ideas, etc. for half of their job which is general music or perhaps a choir? How will choir directors grow their "music" knowledge without bands? How will instrumental directors understand putting voices with their instruments if they never see or hear the combination? How long will it be before string, wind and percussion students will have a more difficult time growing because their general music program was inadequite? It goes on and on..........

EVERY GREAT CIVILIZATION HAS BEEN KNOWN FOR ITS' ARTS! Collectively the arts will be stronger than they will be separately. You don't have to look far to understand this. Just look at what is happening in China right now.

So, where do we stand? Are we going to be like Congress, the State Legislature and many schol districts (and adminuistartors) and not serve the people (students in this case?) Separation is wrong for the music students of Michigan and the powers that control the state music organizations need to put the kids first! Just look how closely you and Cindy work in Coleman. Both your band program and her vocal program are stronger because of each other. More people in the Coleman community support the music program of the Coleman schools because you two work together. And everyone wins!

Sorry to have "sermonized", but after all these years of working out differences and putting egos aside, the whole situation of "going our separate ways" makes me ill! For the MUSIC students of Michigan, (notice I said Music, not band or choir or orchestra or general music) there has to be an answer. I don't know what it is, but it is there!

Have a good week in Grand Rapids. I hope against hope that you'll be back there next year. As you know, I will not be able to be there. My daughter (vocal music teacher), son-in-law (Interlochen Booth) and daughter-in-law (middle school band) and son (Saturday only) will all be there to share and grow. My job will be to help take care of grandchildren so ALL of these music people from my family can be together in Grand Rapids.

District 1 Directors,

One last reminder that the Big Rapids High School Wind Symphony will be performing in its sixth appearance at the MMC Friday at 9:30am. Thank you for all of your support and encouragement. Though I don't think I'll ever truly feel "ready," my kids are stepping up to a challenging program and continue to improve every time we rehearse the music. The program includes:

District Meeting Time

Hi everyone -

I have received a few e-mail with questions regarding the time of tomorrow nights meeting. Our meeting tomorrow night will begin at 6:00pm (dinner at 5:00pm). The executive board decided to move up the meeting time due to the large amount of information/discussion that will take place - as many of you are already aware of the issues at hand.

This is different then what was presented and agreed upon in at our September meeting, as stated in the minutes you received. We look forward to meeting together tomorrow night at 6:00pm!

At long last, I have made it back onto MSBOA1.org... Thank you Greg!!

Please remember to submit your Festival Registrations and check or po at the Winter Meeting on January 5th. At a later date, I will be requesting any program revisions so we don't all play "ABC March" or "Balch's Delight", etc. Some of you are quite creative.

Issues with work assignments are "on your own," just keep me in the loop with any changes made so the site chair may know of them before the day of Festival.

Remember that all materials are due at the meeting or postmarked the same day via certified mail. Any known issues with scheduling must be made prior to me posting the schedule. THE PRINTED SCHEDULE STANDS... I WILL PUT YOU ON YOUR FIRST OR SECOND CHOICE, AND IT WAS UP TO YOU TO MAKE SURE BOTH WORKED. Changing the schedule after the official posting is difficult and a big pain, especially if changing days or sites. Requests made for day or site preferences are first-come, first-served. Please use professional courtesy for both myself and the other directors.

Read the yearbook very carefully before you attend so you are familiar with the rules of the Festival. Cindy and I will contact each of the directors attending our sites with logistics, etc. Remember - 1 piece in SR this year, 5 minutes to sing/study through....

Thanks for your support of another great Honors Band! Everything went well and the weather was great. Please mail your check to Greg VanStrien if you still owe for the event.
The DVD's are done and ready to be shipped. In order for me to ensure I send enough out to each school ,please email me back by the end of school on Tuesday the number of DVDs you should be receiving. I will mail them out on Tuesday. If you need more than you paid for, please just let me know the quantity and send me a check after you receive them.
Also, please email me any comments about the event so we can improve on things for next year.
My comment: We should insist on a march and a traditional Holiday piece.

MSBOA Honors Band

Directors,
It looks like we are going to have no weather problems. What?
I have a few point to cover before you arrive.

The day begins at 9:00 am sharp
There will a light snack for breakfast beginning at 8:30 am
Lunch is pizza, fruit, and juice
Dinner is sloppy joes, fruit, and juice - dessert.
Concert is 7:00 pm
Students should wear casual wear during the day and bring there concert wear for the evening.
Parents are invited
The cost is $10 and is due when you arrive. Please collect the money and bring it to me in the morning. Check out to MSBOA.
DVD's are available if you wish at $10 and will be sent out before Christmas.
