To the Membership of MSBOA,

In discussion with the President and 2 Past Presidents, it has been decided to maintain the Membership Fee structure that was established 5 years ago with no increase for any level. MSBOA will continue to monitor these fees for future consideration.

Through an increased effort MSBOA has reduced expenses and improved efficiency so that these fees can be maintained for an unprecedented 5^th year.

School Membership $375

Joint School (2 schools that qualify under the guidelines) $550 ($275 each)

On-line Membership Renewal is now available for the 2010-2011 school year.

Log in to www.msboa.org > Select MSBOA Members > Select Member Administration > select the school that you are renewing > select Renew my membership for 2010-2011 > complete the information.

You may be able to use funding that is still available to your program to pay for your membership

A Jazz Workshop has once again been scheduled next year for September 25. This is the second year it has been offered, largely due to the success of the first. The location and content have yet to be determined. That’s where you come in! Below is a link to a brief survey. Teacher of the Year voting

In your spare time.... Okay, when you find a moment of quiet with time to think, it's time for Band and/or Orchestra Teacher of the Year nominations. This person could be from our district but can also be from a different district. It cannot be someone who is retiring at the end of this year. Qualifications include: fundamental musicianship of the highest caliber, service to students, service to the community, service to the profession, and consistency in the above categories for a number of years.

If you would like to nominate a person and could have someone email to second the nomination, that would be excellent. I will have a ballet prepared prior to the meeting. We will also check for nominations at our meeting on May 3 in Ludington before we vote.

Dear Fellow MSBOA Members,

I have a problem that I am hoping one of you may be able to help me with. I was accidentally scheduled to work in Manistee MI for my State B&O work assignment. The problem with this assignment is that it would require a 4 hour drive. This is not going to be possible. I have been informed that my only option is to find someone that can fulfill this work assignment for me.

Is there anyone out there that can help me out? I am willing to pay a stipend of $60.00 to reimburse you for your time.

The work assignment is from 11:55am to 4:05pm on Thursday, April 22nd at Manistee High School.

State S&E Work Assignment

Donation question

Thank you to all of you who have weighed in on the original question of donating money to Anne Krupa. There hasn't been anyone who disputed how much Anne deserves the recognition and praise. However, there have been concerns expressed. One is that there is a specific evaluation process in place in the State Office and a gift of this nature may impede that process. Additionally, in recognizing one who does her job ~ very well, but it is her job ~ are we ignoring/devaluing the volunteerism that drives our organization? I would appreciate any additional thoughts or strong opinions that lean either way. Currently we have not acted in any direction.

Dear District Presidents:

I know all of you understand the important role that Ann Kupa plays in the success of our organization and many of you recognize this via cards, emails, small gifts, etc...especially during Administrative Professionals Day (formerly "Secretaries Day"). This year it is on Wednesday, April 21.

I would like to do something extra special for Ann this year and combine the efforts of most or all of our districts. I would like to propose a $25 donation from as many districts that are willing to participate. If all 16 districts went in on this together, we could offer Ann a nice cash gift of $400 for our combined efforts. I figure this is the amount that many districts already spend on chocolates or flowers for her at that time. You could either take donations from your individual directors to reach the $25, or take it from your district's "slush fund" if you have one and are able to do so.

Could you reply and let me know if you would like to be a part of this? If you are planning to do so, please send cash or a check (payable to "MSBOA District 4") by Wednesday, April 14, to the address listed below. I am only about an hour away from Okemos, so I will likely drive there to present her with the gift in person that week. I will make sure a picture is taken and that all districts are credited with being a part of this gift to Ann.

If you're like me, you know what a great person Ann is and how deserving she is of this token of our appreciation. In this day of corporate bonuses in companies to people that I believe do not deserve it, a $400 gift to the person who truly runs our organization seems appropriate.

Congratulations on a very successful week of B&O Festival! The adjudicators were very impressed overall with the level of musicianship and how well the sites ran. Thank you all for your hard work.

Please be mindful of the State B&O registration and deadlines. You have until this coming Friday to complete the registration process. The two District 1 sites are Big Rapids and Manistee.

There were a number of items left at the Big Rapids site, as I am sure some items may have been left in Cadillac and Manistee as well. Directors: if students are missing items, please contact the host school.

Once again, congratulations on a great week. Good luck with the rest of the year and I will see you all at the Spring Meeting!

I know (and apologize) for not giving a lot of turn around time for getting checks in the mail. Please do the best you can, and if it is not going to be possible to get a form and check in the mail by Friday, just shoot me an email or call. I will make sure you have medals ready for next week.

Attached you will find the worker assignments. Please take careful note

the site and what time you are to report. If you need to make a switch,

must make the call and then report back to me that a switch has taken

Also, please send me any revisions to your performance program/order, etc.

Use a subject heading "Festival Program" or the like so that I can keep my

Lastly, please be an audience for another school as part of your student's

Festival experience. No one likes performing for an empty hall. As you

Attached you will find a PDF of the 2010 Band & Orchestra

schedule. Most everyone received first preferences with the the

exception of the Manistee site that was heavily requested as a first-

choice (likely due to having two days last year).

The work assignment schedule will soon follow as Jodi and I are still

working through the "rookie" odds and ends I hadn't though of in my

first draft. It is my hope to have this up early next week.

HS Solo and Ensemble General Information

Dear District One HS Directors~

We are just about ready to host HS Solo and Ensemble this Saturday. Our festival headquarters will be located in our HS/JHS Media Center (in the main hallway) across from the auditorium. This is were we will have morning-afternoon workers meeting and lunch at 12:30. Please remind your students to be respectful of our facility and "borrowed classrooms."

The Cadillac Band Boosters will have a concession stand located in the JHS Cafeteria (with a large selection of things at a modest price). Please encourage your students and their parents to take advantage of this concession stand! Medals and t-shirts/sweatshirts will be available in the JHS Cafeteria too!

I will have some larger percussion items available for you to borrow (so you may not have to bring a trailer of equipment). They are: 1 concert bass drum; 1 set of timpani (5 available); concert marimba; xylophone; and vibes. Please e-mail me ASAP if you are planning on using any of my equipment. Please remind your students to bring their own mallets and smaller equipment needs (music is helpful too).

I have received very few scratches; this is good and bad as there are schools requesting needs for specific AM or PM performance slots.

Directors:

Thank you to the directors that have already sent scratches, please continue to send me any known scratches that you have, as this allows me to successfully run the festival efficiently for all involved.

Please continue to market the t-shirt and sweatshirt sales as this is profit gained for District One.

If you have concerns and conflicts with your scheduled events, please contact me ASAP. Please DO NOT switch events from one section to another section.

Also, be aware that the MSBOA yearbook clarifies that events added/entered after the deadline (late entries), a $25.00 per event, up to a $100.00 maximum, fee applies. This is not to take the place of events that you have already registered and paid for, as an event time slot entered and paid for still stands. If an event changes, member numbers requiring more players, the difference of the original fee paid should be submitted prior to, or on the day of the festival.

On another note, the Yearbook also clarifies that once an event has been accepted for a MSBOA Festival; there will be no refund of fees should the event cancel.

Thanks for helping to make District One festivals successful and a valuable experience for all that attend.

CAYO is a regional full orchestra which gives area students the opportunity to perform full orchestra literature, which is not offered in any of our schools. We are in need of percussionists, french horn players, and one clarinetist. String players...there will never be too many! Please contact me for further details. We rehearse every Sunday from 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. at Mackinaw Trail Middle School, 8401 S. Mackinaw Trail in Cadillac.
